I just felt I should kick knowledge on here for a change.

They’re not a myth, and were a real group started in 1776 in Bavaria, Germany. But haven’t existed since 1785 as the ruler of Bavaria at that time Karl Theodor, banned all secret societies.
The creator of the illuminati, Adam Weishaupt was Catholic (a Jesuit Catholic to be exact).
The group was made up of open minded individuals inspired by the Age of Enlightenment (a movement started by philosophers such as Isaac Newton) and was modeled after the Freemasons with the focus of just being for the benefit of the people. They had goals such as ending all monarchies, superstition, prejudice, applying separation of church and state to all governments, and some really daring goals such as perfecting human nature through education, ending government altogether, and even ending organized religion (note I said organized religion, not religion itself).
George Washington liked the ideas of the Illuminati, or at least was satisfied with the thought that these ideas (along with the ideas of Jacobinism) may have spread within the United States.
Around 1797 and 1798, Augustin Barruel and John Robison published two books claiming that the Illuminati had survived and were apart of this internal conspiracy claiming that it was behind the French Revolution.
Robison and Barruel’s books made their way to the United States where Reverend Jedidiah Morse and others sermonized against the Illuminati which were printed in newspapers at the time (remember the Illuminati was against organized religion).
The Anti-Illuminati talk had died down in the first 10 years of the 1800s though later started back up again in the 1820s and 1830s when an Anti-Freemason movement had started (I won’t talk about Free Masons here as I know nothing about them)

Now I’m sure you’re asking yourself, where in any of this did these people get Lady GaGa, Jay-Z, Rihanna, Kanye West and Beyonce aiding in a plot to take over the world?

The modernized outlook on the Illuminati comes from a man named Myron Fagan, a writer, producer and director for film and theatre for 20th Century Fox and other Hollywood film studios, a supporter of Republican Presidential candidate Charles Evans Hughes, a racist and a frequent accuser of communism back in the “communist scare” days of America.

He had published several theater performances portraying the United Nations, Theodore Roosevelt and others as secretly communist. These plays met considerable backlash back in the 1940s which brought him to claim that these same communist conspiracies had existed in Hollywood too.

Which is the root of this misinformation today.

Now I’m not sure who exactly is keeping these ideas alive, I’m just a big history nerd.
